Joann to Shut Down All Stores After 80+ Years in Business
2/25/2025
Joann, the beloved fabrics and crafts retailer that has served quilters, knitters, and DIY enthusiasts for over 80 years, is officially going out of business and closing all of its stores. The Hudson, Ohio-based company, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January, had initially promised to keep stores open, but persistent low consumer demand and inventory shortages forced a change in plans.
Earlier this month, Joann had announced it would close 500 stores, more than half of its nationwide locations. However, on Sunday, the company confirmed that following a recent auction, financial services firm GA Group, along with Joann’s term lenders, won the bid to acquire nearly all of the retailer’s assets. As a result, Joann will begin winding down operations and conducting going-out-of-business sales across all locations.
What Happens Next?
Stores, the website (Joann.com), and the mobile app will remain operational during final liquidation sales.
The company says store closure dates and website changes will be announced soon.
Joann expects it will take several weeks to complete final sales before shutting down for good.
A Struggle to Stay Afloat
Joann had previously filed for Chapter 11 in March 2024, emerging as a private company, but continued operational struggles led to another bankruptcy in January 2025. “Joann leadership, our board, advisers, and legal partners made every possible effort to find a better solution to keep the company afloat,” the retailer said in a statement. Now, the company is focused on ensuring an orderly shutdown while minimizing the impact on customers, employees, and stakeholders. This marks the end of an era for one of the most well-known names in the fabric and craft industry.
