The news first came to light through Eddie Johnson, former NBA player and longtime Suns TV analyst, who shared the announcement on social media: "I am so sad to report we have lost another @NBA Fraternity member! Nine year veteran Oliver Miller has passed away at age 54! Going to miss you Big O."
Miller had previously revealed his cancer diagnosis in a social media post in late February.
During his nine-year NBA career, Miller played for multiple teams including the Phoenix Suns, Toronto Raptors, Detroit Pistons, Minnesota Timberwolves, Dallas Mavericks, and Sacramento Kings. His professional journey began after being selected 22nd overall by the Suns in the 1992 NBA Draft.
As a rookie, Miller was part of the Phoenix squad that reached the 1992-93 NBA Finals, where they faced Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. He later became an inaugural member of the Toronto Raptors franchise when the team joined the league in 1995.
Before his NBA career, Miller played four years at the University of Arkansas under Hall of Fame coach Nolan Richardson. During his collegiate career, he helped lead the Razorbacks to three consecutive SEC regular season and tournament championships, as well as a Final Four appearance in 1990, where they ultimately fell to Duke.
In a statement, the Arkansas men's basketball team described Miller as "a true embodiment of the Razorback spirit" and expressed their sadness at his passing.
The Toronto Raptors also released a statement acknowledging Miller's special place in their history: "He holds a special place in our history as a member of our inaugural team in 1995, and we are so grateful for all his contributions."
