Daylight Saving Time 2025: When to 'Spring Forward' and Why It Happens
It's that time of year again—Daylight Saving Time (DST) is about to begin, meaning Americans will lose an hour of sleep this weekend but gain more daylight in the evening.

When Does Daylight Saving Time Start?
Mark your calendars! DST begins on Sunday, March 9, at 2 a.m. local time. At that moment, the clocks will jump forward one hour to 3 a.m., giving us longer daylight hours in the evening.
When Does Daylight Saving Time End?
DST will continue until Sunday, November 2, when clocks will "fall back" one hour, returning to standard time for the winter months.
Which States Don’t Observe Daylight Saving Time?
Not everyone participates in the time change. Hawaii and most of Arizona opt out, sticking to standard time year-round. Arizona, aside from the Navajo Nation, avoids DST because longer, hotter evenings aren’t exactly ideal in the desert.
Why Do We Have Daylight Saving Time?
Originally introduced to conserve energy and make better use of daylight, DST has been a part of U.S. timekeeping since the Standard Time Act of 1918. The Department of Transportation now oversees the observance of DST and U.S. time zones, citing energy savings and crime reduction as key benefits.
Is Daylight Saving Time Going Away?
Despite growing calls to eliminate the time change, no recent efforts have gained real traction. Lawmakers have introduced bills to make Daylight Saving Time permanent, but they have stalled in Congress. Even former President Donald Trump promised to push for an end to the practice, but as of now, nothing has changed.
For now, get ready to spring forward—and maybe go to bed a little earlier on Saturday night!
