His death was confirmed on Saturday by his wife, Mara Hennessey, and stepdaughter, Leah Hennessey. In a statement to Rolling Stone, they revealed that Johansen died at home in New York on Friday afternoon, surrounded by music, flowers, and love. The cause was natural, following nearly a decade of health issues. Recently, Johansen had disclosed that he was battling stage four cancer and a brain tumor. His condition worsened after an accident in November in which he fractured his spine in two places, leaving him bedridden. His family had launched a fundraising campaign to cover his medical expenses. Born in New York, Johansen rose to fame in the 1970s as the frontman of the New York Dolls. The band was a pioneer in blending glam rock with proto-punk, releasing influential albums such as New York Dolls (1973) and Too Much Too Soon (1974). Their bold style and androgynous image challenged conventions, leaving a lasting impact on music and inspiring the emergence of punk rock. After the band's breakup in 1976, Johansen embarked on a solo career and reinvented himself in the 1980s as Buster Poindexter, an alter ego that embraced swing and blues. He also explored acting, appearing in films like Scrooged and Let It Ride. In 2004, the New York Dolls reunited for a performance at the Meltdown Festival, following an invitation from Morrissey. Though Arthur "Killer" Kane passed away shortly after the show, Johansen and Sylvain Sylvain kept the band going for several years, releasing three more albums before calling it quits. Johansen’s legacy was honored in the 2022 documentary Personality Crisis: One Night Only, directed by Martin Scorsese, which highlighted his influence on music and culture. With Sylvain's passing in 2021, Johansen became the last remaining member of the original New York Dolls lineup. He leaves behind an undeniable legacy as a punk pioneer and a defining figure in rock history.
